Heartworm season PDF Print E-mail

Heartworm/Flea Season

Heartworm/flea season in Canada normally begins in May with heartworm tests and then prevention starts June 1st.  With our current unseasonably warm weather we have had clients see mosquitoes and fleas in the past few weeks, so this year you may start your pet’s heartworm and/or flea prevention on May 1st.

It is recommended a heartworm test be done every other year before medicating. This is to make sure your pet has not been exposed to heartworm before starting the prevention. If your pet has a large number of worms in the heart and takes prevention medication this would kill the worms all at once and could block the heart.

Cats do not need to be treated for heartworm, only fleas, so they do not require a heartworm test.

To receive your pets’ heartworm and/or flea medication please note the following:

·         We must have seen the pet within the past 12 months. At the most recent examination there must not have been any on-going health concerns.

·         The pet must either have a current negative heartworm test or have had a negative test last year to receive heartworm medication.

·         Puppies born after October 1, 2011 do not need a heartworm test.

Heartworm tests are done by a veterinary technician and must be booked ahead of time. If you come in for the heartworm test you may pick up the medication at the same time.

If your pet has been seen within the last year, on the last visit your pet was healthy, and your pet had a negative heartworm test last year, you may call ahead to pick up the medication. If your pet is a cat they do not need a negative heartworm test.

If you plan to call in for the medication please note:  ALL the heartworm and/or flea medication we carry are prescription products and we require 48 hours to review your pets’ records, get the veterinarian to approve the prescription and to label the medication.
